This is an Antoninianus coin from Philip I, also known as Philip the Arab, who was emperor between 244-249AD. On the reverse it features Salus standing left, feeding from a patera a snake rising from an altar and holding a rudder.

After the death of Gordian III in February 244, Philip, who had been Praetorian prefect, rose to power. He quickly negotiated peace with the Sasanian Empire and returned to Rome to be confirmed by the Senate. According to many historians, he was possibly the first Christian Roman Emperor.

It is in incredible condition for being over 1700 years old with such crisp details and most of the original silvering and would be a fantastic addition to a numismatic collection.

Size: 23mm
