George III Cartwheel two pence, dated 1797 - Georgian/ US colonial coin
Low stock: 1 left
This is a nice George III cartwheel two pence coin dated 1797 with some lovely crisp details. It depicts the laureate and draped bust of King George III with the legend around on raised rim. The reverse depicts the seated figure of Britannia, with a trident in her left hand, an olive branch in her raised right hand, the shield bearing the Union flag resting on her left, sea is in the background with a ship on the left and the legend above and date below on raised rim.
It is a very large and chunky coin created as an attempt to prevent counterfeiting which was rife at the time. 2oz of bronze would have cost 2 pence and so it was not worth it for the counterfeiters to create fakes but just imagine carrying around a pocket of them!
A very nice coin and a must have in any early milled coin collection.
