Genuine Domitian Roman Coin, Ancient Semis Provincial Issue
Low stock: 1 left
This is a genuine provincial issue coin from the emperor Domitian and minted in 81-96 AD from the city of Antioch which is in the south of modern day Turkey. On the reverse it features the letters SC within a wreath, traditionally during this period for coins minted within the Imperial Roman Empire SC would stand for Senatus Consultum, meaning the Senate approved the minting of the coin. In this case though as it was minted within a province of the empire the SC it thought to stand for the province of Syria Coele.
Roman provincial currency was coinage minted within the Roman Empire by local civic rather than imperial authorities. These coins were often continuations of the original currencies that existed prior to the arrival of the Romans. These often featured local languages such as this one with the legend written in ancient Greek.
It is in great condition for the type with a nice applied sand patina on the surface which is amazing for being over 1700 years old and with nice details and would be a fantastic addition to a numismatic collection.
