Elizabeth I Shilling from the Battle of Aylesbury Hoard, Tudor hammered silver coin, 1594 - 1596

This is rare opportunity to own a silver shilling of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) that was discovered as part of the Battle of Aylesbury hoard. The "Battle of Aylesbury" Hoard is a collection of 1,064 silver coins discovered in March 2023 by a metal detectorist and dating from the reigns of Elizabeth I to Charles I, with only 109 coins being Elizabethan shillings. The latest coins were minted in autumn 1642, this date closely aligns with the outbreak of the English Civil War and the Battle of Aylesbury at Holman’s Bridge in November 1642, suggesting they were buried for safekeeping as tensions escalated. The hoard has been fully recorded at the British Museum through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and officially disclaimed (Ref: 2023 T349 | PAS: BUC-D73196). The hoard was auctioned off on the 12th June 2025 by Essex coin auctions where you can find this coin in lot 71.

The obverse shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth I, wearing a ruff and an embroidered dress facing to the left, and the legend around that translates to 'Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland'. The reverse depicts a square topped, quartered shield over a long cross fourchée with the legend around that translates to 'I have made God my helper'. The mint mark is a woolpack dating this coin to 1594 - 1596 from the Tower mint.
