Caracalla Roman Provincial Tetradrachm- Seleucis and Pieria, Antioch, 198-217AD

This is a nice example of a provincial Roman Tetradrachm from a province of the Roman empire called Seleucis and Pieria in Syria. It was minted by Caracalla between 198 to 217 AD and is made from debased silver with a purity of about 25-35%.

Obverse: laureate head of Caracalla, right. the legend reads ΑΥΤ Κ Μ Α ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ and translates to 'Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus'

Reverse: eagle standing facing, wings spread, head left, wreath in beak; between legs, star. The legend reads ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ ΤΟ Δ, and translates to holder of the 'holder of the tribunitian power, consul for the fourth time'

Roman provincial currency was coinage minted within the Roman Empire by local civic rather than imperial authorities. These coins were often continuations of the original currencies that existed prior to the arrival of the Romans. Because so many of them were minted in the Greek areas of the empire, they were usually referred to until fairly recently as Greek imperial coinage.
