Elagabalus Roman Provincial Tetradrachm- Seleucis and Pieria, Antioch, 219AD

This is a nice example of a provincial Roman Tetradrachm from a province of the Roman empire called Seleucis and Pieria in Syria. It was minted by Elagabalus in 219AD and is made from debased silver with a purity of about 25-35%.

Obverse: laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus, right, seen from rear. the legend reads ΑΥΤ Κ Μ Α ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ and translates to 'Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus'

Reverse: eagle standing facing., head left, holding wreath in beak and spreading wings; star between legs. The legend reads ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ ΤΟ Β Δ Ε, and translates to holder of the tribunitian power, consul for the second time, of the 4 eparchies

These coins were often continuations of the original currencies that existed prior to the arrival of the Romans.
